Role Description:
The Data Solutions Architect reports to the Manager of Application Administration within the ITS – Academic & Collaborative Technologies unit. The primary focus of this position is to provide technology and architectural leadership with respect to the design and delivery of enterprise-level big data solutions to support a variety of academic and research initiatives. The Data Solutions Architect will work in collaboration with business and technical stakeholders to build and implement data pipelines, data processing, data warehouse and analytics capabilities using cloud technologies. This role will ensure that technical solutions and environments are built reliably, optimized for scale, and meet enterprise security standards. Responsibilities
  • Developing and updating architectural framework for highly complex and confidential university-wide IT systems
  • Reconciling business requirements with information architecture needs for highly complex system integration
  • Conducting data modelling for business system analysis
  • Analyzing and recommending suitability of major new equipment or software systems
  • Analyzing and configuring highly complex enterprise applications and services
  • Designing, testing, and modifying programming code
  • Planning and implementing IT systems independently
  • Advising on cost, feasibility, and impact of different implementation solutions
Priority Requirements:
 
  • 8+ years experience as a Data Solutions Architect
    • 3+ years of experience as a Data Architect/Data Engineer with a demonstrated strength in data modeling, ETL development and data warehousing to design, develop and implement enterprise big data solutions
    • 5+ years of IT experience in large scale technology architecture, operations, and design-related disciplines
    • Strong experience in Data warehouse and data lake architecture principles
  • 3+ years of experience with SQL and managing large data sets using relational databases (MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, etc.)
  • 3+ years of concrete programming and scripting language experience (e.g. Python, Java) with understanding of SDLC principles
  • Practical experience using data visualization and business intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) to analyze data
  • In-depth working experience using AWS and Azure platform services including:
    • AWS Glue, AWS Athena, AWS SQS, AWS Kinesis, AWS Redshift, AWS EMR, AWS S3, Azure Data Lake, Azure Databricks and Azure Synapse Analytics
  • Hands on experience in big data technologies including Spark, Hadoop, Hive, HDFS, Python
  • Interacting with middleware (API gateways)
  • Data modeling for data warehousing/analysis (Denormalized – Star & Snowflake Schemas, Data Vault)
  • Writing complex, highly optimized SQL and Python to interact with large data sets as needed for data engineering, modeling and processing
  • Infrastructure orchestration using IaC principles and CI/CD pipelines
  • Business information requirement analysis experience with a strong understanding of project management principles
  • Solid experience with data privacy and security practices, metadata management, data governance and access controls within an enterprise data management framework
  • Data integration and streaming integration concepts and architecture
  • Data ETL pipelines for large-scale transformations, conversion and partitioning
  • Business intelligence, query, and reporting/analytics tools
  • Techniques for detecting and addressing data quality issues
Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.

About the Team:
 
The Enterprise Academic & Collaborative Technologies (ACT) group is a partnership between the Chief Information Officer’s (CIO) division and the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation (CTSI).
ACT is a central department responsible for all matters pertaining to the development, operation, maintenance, and effectiveness of core teaching and learning systems and enterprise collaborative technologies at the University. Included within these responsibilities are the academic toolbox (the learning management system and associated applications), web hosting services (CMS), collaborative applications (i.e., MS Teams) and enterprise video-mediated applications, including the central video-conferencing bridge and support for mobile application development (via the MADLab). This responsibility includes vendor relationship management with both for-profit suppliers as well as non-profit and consortium partners. ACT also serves as the main connector between the CIO's portfolio and library technology services.
