Location: Downtown Toronto (Hybrid)

Duration: 6 months (possibility of extension or FT)

 

Job Description:

As part of the legal team, we are looking for someone who is highly skilled at reviewing, comprehending and analyzing technical Intellectual Property and marketing/advertising issues and formulating practical advice and recommendations.

 

You will be responsible for managing critical deadlines in handling: i) Intellectual Property protection, with a specific focus in the areas of trademarks and copyrights; ii) Contest and promotion compliance with Canadian and US laws; and iii) Marketing and Advertising compliance with Canadian and US laws to support lines of business in Canada and the United States.

 

Job Responsibilities:

• Implement and (net new responsibility: manage) the Trademark Protection Strategy - a framework for protection and defense of the AMRP brands and trademark portfolios in conjunction with applicable federal laws; specifically, address all matters relating to French and English watches, searches, pre-clearance, campaigns and promotions, TM oppositions, litigation proceedings, and enforcements in an efficient and effective manner; support and/or communicate with internal and external resources, as well as stakeholders as directed/instructed, and/or coordinated with/by the AVP Legal or SVP, Corporate & Legal Affairs.

• Evaluate and provide legal and strategic advice, counsel, education and risk assessment to support the AMRP relating to trademark acquisitions, trademark applications, branding and brand name selection, trademark clearance, trademark use and protection, trademark prosecution etc.

• Meet with business partners to discuss concept feasibility, business objective (big picture), provide direction, identify other individuals that are instrumental to achieving the objective and budget implications.

• Monitor legal developments, case law, rapidly emerging technologies and trends impacting Intellectual Property rights and Marketing and Advertising law compliance in Canada and the US; distributes relevant industry articles/education and updates to internal management, marketing associates and direct reports.

• Co-ordinate external counsel; comprehends and interprets legal opinions and business cases


Must Have Skills:

• 6+ years of directly related work experience combined law office and corporate law office experience in a trademark and marketing practice area.

• 3+ years of Supervisory/management experience

Canadian and United States Intellectual Property and Marketing and Advertising Law directly related work experience as a Senior Paralegal in a mid-size to large law firm and corporate law department

• Working knowledge and understanding of Canadian and United States trademark, copyright, marketing and advertising and contest laws and a solid understanding of consumer protection and privacy laws.

• Experience in managing trademark portfolios.

• Highly skilled at reviewing, comprehending and analyzing technical Intellectual Property and marketing/advertising issues and formulating practical advice and recommendations.
